Lincoln Weld Pak 100 Wire Feed Too Fast

I picked up a little 110 volt Lincoln Weld Pak 100 and like most things I own it needs some work. The wire feed was "stuck" and is feeding too fast without any noticeable changes as I turn the knob. I found the rheostat to be failed / not changing resistance as I turn it, which is the likely wire feed culprit. The new one should be here tomorrow. The arc seemed reasonably okay for a small machine, minus the obvious too high wire feed. I have another larger mig machine, but I feel like this small Lincoln would make a great portable rig so plan to wire up a solenoid to run shielding gas on it. It appears it has everything else minus the solenoid and hoses. Has anyone here done this? Did you like it and was it worth it?

Anyway, I am looking for a face plate, since mine is really torn up. It looks like someone tried to clean it with solvent and melted the plastic to the point it cant be read. I would also like to run 10lb spools in it, since I already have them for my other machine, so I need those parts (collar / mandrel etc.) to fit in the machine. I am sure I can buy these parts new, but I am having trouble finding a parts manual since I cannot read the serial number on whats left of my name plate.

Johnny There are conversion kits sold at the big box stores so I have to think that it would be doable. Whether or not it's worth doing is another story and speculation on your part as to what you intend to do with the machine and if it will be capable after all the add on's. I don't know the specifics as to what type of settings the machine has min/max voltage, min/max wfs-amps and duty cycle. What is the desired material to be welded?

It is $164.00 though- if you got the Weldpak cheap enough then it might be worth it.

Thanks for the links. You're not kidding that is cheap for the adapter! Looks like all I need to track down is a face plate, which I did not see a number for in the book.

I made out some numbers of the code: 017, which I saw in another manual that it was for code: 10172 so that has got to be it. That one also does not have a number for the face plate.

As far as welded materials, I generally do not mig anything that is not regular carbon steel and I cannot see this machine doing over 3/16" and that is probably pushing it. I likely will not be doing anything over 1/8" with it as I have better choices for thicker stuff. I end up doing small projects for friends and neighbors on a variety of junk because they know I can weld.

I saw a gas kit, for more money, on home depot's website and thought I could probably come up with the majority of the parts needed. To me a $160 kit does not sense for the machine, but that is because I already have a flow meter, gas hose, wire etc. Looking at the diagram it looks like it is a 120 volt solenoid, which I cannot imagine is going to be terribly expensive.

I got some time and changed out the rheostat which fixed my wire feed issues and verified the settings on the inside of the door are decent. The welder came to me with a spool of harbor freight flux core in it which seems to spatter more than I would expect, at least in the 3 beads I ran. I also do not run much flux core so it might not be the wire. The welds and arc are pretty decent otherwise and it seems to have a decent punch on some nearly 3/16 scrap for a small welder.

I tracked down a 110 volt solenoid and the proper fitting for the hose that I have and plan to get that hooked up when it arrives.

As a reminder welding 1/8'' is about as thick of material you can go. A dedicated circuit is a must. That machine new is only $300.00 and has everything.

It's probably too late now. Those 110 volt by me are always avaiable for a reasonable price. Hope it works out.

I agree, 1/8" is about as much as I would trust this machine to do. 3/16 is pushing it even though my scrap test was pretty good. I have a lot better choices to weld 1/8"+ with, rather than relying on a 110 volt mig anyway. The real purpose for this machine is portability for the inevitable neighbor / friend calling "hey can you weld this or that".

Having it's own circuit is definitely important, I agree. I think my radio and maybe a lightbulb are the only other things plugged into that line.
I'm really just messing around with hooking up gas since I got it for next to nothing. Plus I have 10lb wire spools for my larger machine.
I picked up a gas solenoid for about $10 and the rheostat was reasonable as well so I'm certainly not over budget. Haven't had the time to hook it up yet. Life seems to get in the way of projects sometimes.
