Fender Precision Bass Pickups - Original Vintage Design Review

  1. Hi - I am thinking of changing the stock pickup on my 2002 Usa precision in favor of Fender's Original Precision pickup, which is the one used in the '62 reissue as I understand. Has anyone used this pickup? I am curious to hear opinions on these.
    Thanks

  2. I put i in a MIM P, nails that vintage P Bass tone for me. I don't know how it differs in audio from a MIA stock pup but information technology was a major upgrade to the stock MIM P pup.
  3. I endemic a MIM P for a while and tried 4 dissimilar pickups in it. IMO the "vintage" models all sounded roughly the same. If your looking for a very subtle change in tone the '62 might be for y'all, but if you desire a more rockin' tone with dial I highly recommend MFD P from G&L or Seymour's QP.
  4. I've got the Originals in my 2000 USA Precision. It'due south a fantastic upgrade in my opinion.

I didn't similar the stock pick-ups, so I first tried Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. I loved them initially, but kind of got tired of them afterward a while. They've got a large massive sound, and are very very high output. But eventually I found them kind of tiring... sort of relentless and not 'sophisticated' enough for the P-tone which I like.

So I bought a set of Originals, and it was a major revolution. They introduced a whole new chemical element of subtlety and detail to my P. I also find that the Originals are far more sensitive to playing style and touch than the stock pups and 1/four Pounders. Barky, growly, thumpy, smooth, punchy, it'southward all in that location.. it just depends on how you play. Highly recommended.

    +i !!!
(simply I accept Fender Jazz Bass)

  6. Sorry virtually existence nit-picky :crying: but the ORIGINAL P-bass pup is a single curl, 1 piece unit, like those used in the original 51,and recently in the 51ri, and Sting sig. Not the 2 piece hum canceling pup used in anything after early 57. Those unmarried coil P-bass pups are very dissimilar from the 62 yous're talking about.

If you're looking for vintage tone in a split P-bass pup try the Duncan SPB-! vintage.

  7. Would those be the Original Originals? Or are they the New Originals?

Pitiful, couldn't resist -- as well Spinal Tappy non to say information technology.;)

  8. I'thou selling my Aero Pbass type 1 pickup with is wound exactly like the original for $125 shipped
  9. I put one in my SX P and information technology sounds great.
  10. I think when Fender says "Original" they mean original as in what was originally offered in the bass in question...
  11. I take used just most every P bass pickup made. I recall the Raised A antiquity sounds not bad although soft and noisy, my 2nd choice for passive is an emg select. Sound bright deep and extremely quiet if you lot need that. Steve

  13. Hello, I simply joined and so, sorry for starting an old thread upwardly.
I love the vintage tone from a P bass and I owuld like to go equally close to the original P tone that I ould get. I have 2, 1 with the Quarter Pounders and the other currently has the Fender original '62 P bass pickups. I recently saw that Fender had came out with a Fender Pure Vintage '58 and '63 Precision Bass pickup sets. I take looked at the specs on these pickups but I was wondering if anyone could assistance me empathize if I would encounter a large change or minimal change if I bandy out the originals for the '58s or '63s?
  14. Fender original P-bass pickups. I like 'em. They are very responsive and sound adept.
  15. What you dont like with the 62pickup first?

If you feel the Original 62 pickup is too much upper MID and treble while lack some bottom, just put a set up of Labella 760FL to balance it.
If y'all like me , own a fender 63pup and i found it thick lo-MID and lack treble, my opinion is the Sadowsky Black Characterization Flat is great friction match.

Only estimate the pickup tone with one kind of string blazon is not fail and was a large fault. String and pickup is always need matching to get your correct/favorite sound.

  16. Thank you for the reply. I was thinking about switching to flats, I'll requite that a try before I do annihilation else.

I wouldn't change the strings I utilize, (particularly to flats, yuk) because I don't care for the pickups in my bass. I don't really like the Original 62's because they are likewise loftier mid range focused and lack a bit of low mids. Personally I remember the Duncan SPB-1 is a much nicer pickup for less money. I have no personal feel with them but the sound clips that @JimmyM posted of the EMG Geezers are absolutely outstanding equally well. I would suggest either of those pickups over the 62
  18. Thank you, i'll expect into that besides. I liked the 18-carat pure vintage serial '58'southward and '63's but it's hard to know what they will actually sound similar without buying them and installing them. There really isn't any adept sound clips of those though.
I similar my quarter pounders in my other P bass, simply wanted more of a vintage sound on the other.
  19. I replaced the pickup of my 1996 Am Std Pbass with the Fender Original. The sound was less scooped and more than full and punchy. I similar upper mids every bit I play with La Bella flats and it is swell. Information technology is a good modernistic.
    Guiseppe and Yahboy like this.
